Geological fieldwork localities in Greenland summer 2011

Geological and related fieldwork during the summer of 2011

The Inland Ice and climate in the time after the latest ice age (the RINK project)

During 2011 drill-cores will we collected from the south east coast of Greenland. Particularly in the area around the Sermilik Fjord a number of lakes will be investigated. These lakes are connected to the Inland Ice. Material for fossil DNA analysis will also be collected.

The intentions with this part of the project is to investigate the melting and the fringe zone's reaction to warm periods during Holocene (approx. 8.000 years ago) and after the Little Ice Age (since ca. 1900 AD).

Cooperation with DTU Space on glacier dynamics

In cooperation with DTU Space we will re-photograph the Upernavik glacier in North West Greenland. The purpose of this is to make a new photogrammetric survey of the glacier fronts. Along the same lines we will in a DTU Space led cooperation visit the ice dammed lakes south of Ilulissat. Here the rationale is to reconstruct the drainage history related to glacier dynamics and climate.

The work is supported by the Commission for Scientific Research in Greenland, the Research Council for Nature and Universe and the Danish National Research Foundation.

Permafrost and environmental history on Disko

As part of the Permagas project we will be doing ground-truthing terrain surfaces on the eastern part of Disko Island. The results of this will be used for mapping of permafrost structures by remote sensing.

Furthermore we will be drilling in selected lakes to get information about local isostasy, which can be used to calculate the age of the terrain surfaces near the coast. Drill samples will also shed light on the climate history. Finally we hope to get samples for exposure dating on the western part of Disko.
